This statement means that a man that has no goal in life won't get anywhere like a ship without a rudder because having a rudder and choosing somewhere to go to you''ll get there as well by having a goal if not you are not moving.

I think that character means alot in somone. For example, setting a beautiful character can lead to good things like receiving money or free gifts as well as being asked out to a date with cousins or just by getting free things by showing your best character. Having good grades as well can lead your parents to buy things for you that you need or giving you money and things like that. But after all, it all depends on your best character.
